Senior Software Engineer

We’re looking for an extraordinarily talented software engineer to join our small team. As a startup, we have to achieve an awful lot with our limited resources. We need one of those special people who just gets things done in a rapidly changing environment.

About you

You’re happy writing complex server-side code to crunch your way through information, building modern user friendly web interfaces, and doing a spot of systems administration on the side.

But you’re not just a wizard with a text editor and a command line. You’re down to earth, and know how talk to customers to find out exactly what software they need.

As an experienced software engineer, you know that you can radically improve the daily working lives of a practically unlimited number of people, just by writing code and running it.

You have a passion to change things for the better, and agree with us that helping smaller organisations manage their information would be a worthwhile way to spend your working day.

Essential skills

• At least three post-university years experience of software development in a commercial environment
• Experience of developing software in a static language and a dynamic language
• Web application development (HTML, CSS, Javascript, sensible use of ‘AJAX’)
• Comfortable with a UNIX command line and basic sysadmin tasks
• Relentless focus on quality and the user experience

Desirable skills

• Ruby, Java, C, C++, Objective-C
• Solaris, Mac OS X, Windows
• Ruby web app development (Rails or Merb)
• Desktop application development (Win32/MFC, Cocoa)
• Test driven development
• Comfortable working in a small team

The job

As we’re so small, it’s a very flexible role. We have lots of work to be done, and our new team member will pitch in and do whatever it takes to help our company and our customers succeed.

Primarily you’ll be developing our system, working on improvements and new features. But because our company is focused on great customer service, you’ll also be on the front line, helping the people who use your work every day.

We develop primarily in Ruby and Java, with a bit of C++ for our desktop software. While we use Ruby on Rails for some minor tasks, this isn’t a Rails developer position.

Salary

By negotiation. We’re expecting to pay good market rates and offer profit share.

The working environment

We currently work from home. We’d meet up at least once a week somewhere near Lewisham (SE London), but where you’d work for the rest of the time is up to you. If you’d prefer to work in the company of other developers, we have a desk in North London, in a pleasant room shared with another startup.
